This tiki painting is inspired by 1960s travel brochures. I love the 1960s illustrators and the modern look they aspired to create. It took me forever to finish this one, it is very graphic and flat, so I had to painstakingly paint several careful coats over each area.....not to mention keep the lines fairly straight.

This view is on 385 between the towns of Crane and McCamey. I love the West Texas landscape. The people out here are the nicest and the most down to earth folks you will ever meet. I traveled this stretch of highway a lot when we were living in Odessa. To me, this is the Texas of legend. Change comes real slow, and in some areas not at all. You really do feel the old west out here. This is Gods country and one must travel here with knowledge and respect for the desert, or literally you could die.

This is what spring brings to San Antonio. These cacti grow wild around here and really crop up in the darnedest places. The seem to like rocky tough spots where nothing else would even want to grow. I will say one thing, they are determined! Pretty in their own way too..... Don't touch these guys. It is not the big thorns that are the problem.....rather it is covered with very fine almost imperceptible needles that you will be digging out of you skin for days.

This painting belongs to Dan Wheelhouse.
Way back when..... in a galaxy far far away... we grew up together as neighbor kids and later became best friends. The fact is I consider Dan more a brother than a friend. He and I were so close that we literally lived, played and dreamed basically the same. The truth is, he was responsible for my interest in art. He was much better at drawing Farrah Fawcett than I was.....But I envied his skill and tried to be better than him. Then we shared photography as a hobby. Once again his eye was better than mine, but in the end it was me who became the professional artist......We still talk from time to time, but life has placed us in different parts of the world.
I left Forest Park (our childhood town) during college, to never return. I never regretted leaving the area. In fact Cincinnati and I were not at all compatible. I was too cowboy and country for that town. I graduated high school and moved to Morehead Kentucky. Then.....Texas called like a woman, and I traveled westward and settled.

A scene from South Texas near a town called Gonzales. The weather is so unpredictable and long periods of no rain force the ranchers out here to use these wind powered pumps to bring ground water to collection tanks. These windmills are scattered all over the state and have been in use since the first settlers tamed the land. Windmills are a big part of Texas scenery and hold a nostalgic place in the hearts of all Texans.

On the island of Oahu, there is a institution known as the Polynesian Cultural Center. The center provides an entertaining and educational experience of many Pacific Island cultures. Each culture is represented by young people attending nearby Brigham Young University. This painting is of a young Samoan hula dancer. I took several liberties as this is not an individual person, but a composite of several girls from Samoa. The beach and distant islands (the Mokuluas), are of Lanikai Beach.

This is a new painting of one of my favorite beaches on Oahu. This beach is literally called "Sandy Beach". It is known for having some of the roughest shore breaking waves. The views of black lava rock cliffs and powerful waves are absolutely breath taking.

All over the Hawaiian Islands, there are parks that are surrounded by masonry rock walls. These stone fences are made of the volcanic rock found locally. The large stones at the base of these palm trees are volcanic and are scattered through out the Hawaiian landscape. I was struck by the majesty of these three palms and began to wonder about their origin. Some time long ago, these three beauties were little seedlings amongst the rocks. Were they purposely placed here by human ancestors? Or did the hand of God place them in such a way?

It was not all that warm, I would guess in the mid 60s, but still there were some folks laying out on the sand in bikinis. I guess to people from the north this was warm weather. To us, it was too cool to be in swimsuits!

Color is essential to all of my work. I tend to use vivid colorful harmonies in most of my paintings. I will admit that my color choices do not always please the retina, but I am continually striving to express myself with the use of color. I am always trying to create works were the color speaks. The first response from people when viewing my work is nearly always a comment about the color.

Hurricane Ike slamed the Galveston coast on Sept 12th and 13th. It destroyed some of Galvestons historic piers. The Balinese Room has some very interesting history http://balineseroom.net/.

I took these photos in April of 2008. I sure do hope that they will rebuild the piers.

My home made it through the storm with just minor damage so I am blessed.

My thinking here was to create a modern version of the madonna icon. I painted a contemporary young girl with a halo design in the sky around her. The painting is from 2003 quite large, around 30 x 40 inches and is now in a private collection.

I spent the last week in South Carolina at Mytrle Beach. Soaking up some rays and surf is my idea of a good time. Oh, did I mention the site seeing?.. :)
