Merry Christmas

Walden Glenn 16 x 20 inches acrylic on canvas 2008
Merry Christmas everybody!
This snow scene is from Cincinnati Ohio. This view was behind our apartment in Walden Glenn (Just off Hamilton Avenue) We lived there for a couple of years in the early 1990s. I painted this from a photo during the Holidays last year, and finished it after New Years, so it is dated 2008.

This painting is from 2004. I was interested in the retro fashion and the geometric abstract design of the dress and the background.

Latest Tiki

"Tiki Ike" 11 x 30 inches, acrylic on canvas 2008.

A brand new tiki I call him "Tiki Ike". I call him that because I actually worked on him when we were without power after Hurricane Ike. I had started him just before the hurricane.

Diamond Head and Two Palms

Diamond Head with Two Palm Trees acrylic on canvas 8 x 10 inches
I enjoy a quick expressive painting that captures the feeling of a location. Plein Air works have a spontaneity that is so lively and beautiful. The joy of being outside and feeling the breeze cannot be under estimated.

Galveston Seawall After Ike

This is all that remains of Murdochs ( the building in the distance) after Hurricane Ike. Notice the granite monument and how it has been shifted by the force of the sea. This is right in front of where Hooters used to be. These photos were taken yesterday October 3rd 2008.

These two photos are all that is left of the Balinese Room.

Balinese Room and Murdochs in Galveston

Hurricane Ike slamed the Galveston coast on Sept 12th and 13th. It destroyed some of Galvestons historic piers. The Balinese Room has some very interesting history http://balineseroom.net/.
Murdochs was just the coolest gift shop ever. http://www.murdochspier.com/
I took these photos in April of 2008. I sure do hope that they will rebuild the piers.
My home made it through the storm with just minor damage so I am blessed.

Young Madonna

My thinking here was to create a modern version of the madonna icon. I painted a contemporary young girl with a halo design in the sky around her. The painting is from 2003 quite large, around 30 x 40 inches and is now in a private collection.

palm trees at the beach

The beach at Galveston. This photo was taken on April 14 at 9:58 am. It was early on a Monday morning so we had the entire ocean to ourselves. In my mind, this is the best time to hang out.

Wahine and a Cool Cat

A new painting fresh off of the easel. This is 16 x 24 inches on stretched canvas. As you can tell, I am really into the whole Hawaiian fantasy theme right now. In fact I have another hula dancer in the works, and plan to show some progressive photos of the work in progress.

woman with red hair

woman with red hair 20 x 20 inches acrylic on canvas
I know that this one looks very simple. I had originally planned to do it in color, but I stopped here at this stage. It was done.....the simple fresh quality is what makes this painting cool. It has a strong abstract feel. I would just ruin it if I went any further.

young latin woman

Today's post is a small watercolor sketch done in 2005. I am really enjoying posting works that are older and more obscure. I have begun to photograph old sketchbooks from way back...even some old high school drawings. This blog is quickly becoming a retrospective exhibit. I am having fun resurrecting my past work.

collage from mid 1980s

Way back in the mid 1980s, I did several large collages of cut magazines, paper, photos, money, etc. Basically anything that could be glued down. I then lacquered them with a heavy thick varnish. These were quite large, I even did one on and old closet door. All have been sold, and there whereabouts are unknown. You can click this image to see a larger version.
